HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
A salon in the cemetery with Naomi Ryan
Saturday 19th October from 5 pm
“Laws are like cobweb, which may catch small flies, but let wasps and hornets break through” Jonathan Swift
There has never been any shortage of strange, macabre and mysterious crimes, and when they occur, strange, macabre and mysterious defences are sure to follow. It is the role of the defence barrister to persuade the court of these unorthodox defences, and the great barristers of history have done so with aplomb. Thanks to them, judges and juries have considered all manner of bizarre and morbid issues, including whether a murder victim can really be contacted by Ouija board and whether belief in a demon mongoose is enough to make someone mad.
Naomi Ryan will discuss some of the strangest acquittals in legal history and explore how a system that strives for rationality and objectivity tackles some of the weirder and darker claims made by defendants.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Naomi Ryan is a barrister and government lawyer. After qualifying with a Masters in Law from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, she taught criminal law to undergraduates at St Hilda’s College Oxford and University College London before embarking on her career as a criminal barrister, where she both prosecuted and defended. She now works as an advisory lawyer on criminal matters within government. She regrets that she has yet to cross-examine a demon mongoose.
